Don't let the first drink of the New Year be your last

The long, cold nights of winter are perfect for get-togethers and the festive season provides the ideal excuse to party. But when the drinks are flowing it’s easy to forget how much has been consumed.

Warwickshire County Council’s Road Safety Unit are reminding drivers that at this time of the year driving conditions can be difficult and any amount of alcohol will affect reaction time and impair judgement.

Stan Milewski, Senior Road Safety Officer said: “There’s no accurate way of judging how much alcohol is in your blood, so if you have a drink, don’t get behind the wheel afterwards. If you do, the consequences could be chilling – six months in prison, a fine of up to £5000 or a driving ban of at least 12 months.”

Mark Steventon, Police Sergeant, Warwickshire Police Road Safety Unit said: "Combating drinking and driving is a policing priority for Warwickshire Police 365 days of the year but it is timely with the approach of the festive season to remind drivers and riders of their responsibilities.  The potential catastrophic consequences and misery caused by drunk drivers are hard to contemplate at what should be a season of celebration and goodwill."
