Time to make some New Year travel resolutions!

It’s that time of year again when we all have good intentions: eat less, exercise more, save money.

Have you noticed how the number of people down the gym suddenly increases in January? Well, Warwickshire County Council have some advice on how you can keep in trim, save money AND do your bit for the environment all at the same time!

Have you ever thought about replacing your short car journeys with a trip by bike or foot instead? Just think about it: it makes so much sense. Rather than get in the car to pop to the local shop to pick up the local paper and some bread, why not use your own energy instead?

Or when you are getting the kids in the car to take them to the school down the road, why not reach for their hats and gloves and get them walking? And if you work less than five miles away from home, why not jump on your bike and start burning up some of those festive calories?

The Department for Health recommend we take 10,000 steps per day. Many of us do not even achieve half of that with our sedentary lifestyles. The Department for Health also recommends that our kids should be doing at least an hour’s exercise per day – is your child getting the amount they need?

It’s so easy to fit in exercise around our daily routine if we just plan our day a bit better.

Nicola Small, Warwickshire County Council’s Sustainable Travel Manager, said:

“Many people say they do not have time to exercise, or that it costs too much money, but once you get into the habit of replacing a short car journey with an alternative, it’s easy. I cycle four miles to work everyday, so I get in my daily exercise without having to make time for it before or after work. What’s more, I save money on fuel and gym membership.”
