Asylum seekers capture their identity
Young asylum seekers being cared for by Warwickshire County Council have been exploring what life in their new homes means to them in an arts project.
They have taken part in a photography project that helps them explore their identity after what is often a traumatic journey to this country.
The 16 and 17-year-olds from Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran have been learning how to use photographic equipment and have taken a number of portrait shots.
The project involved professional photographer Dawn Sumner and was organised by Warwickshire County Council Asylum Seekers Project and financially assisted by a Social Services Arts Grant.
The young people involved have been exploring the theme of identity and taking photographs for an exhibition celebrating their work.
It will be the centrepiece of a day spent with them evaluating the scheme and the impact it has made on their lives.
Katrina Cowell, Operations Manager, said: “The aim of this project has been to give them the chance to reflect the experiences they have had since coming to the UK. This will give them the chance to develop their interest in photography further and learn skills that will stay with them. The project has helped them forge a bond with this country and given them a chance to express themselves during what can be a bewildering experience.”
