Ash Green prepares for its big day

A Bedworth school is bristling with excitement at plans to transform it in a flourish of colour – in a single day.

Ash Green School is set to be transformed by a team of volunteers – and you can take part.

Members of the community, local churches, businesses, pupils and parents are being invited to take part in a project that is aiming to see the entire school building painted in a week.

Starting on 10 April, The One Project will see a team move into the school and begin to prepare, scrub and treat the walls ready for a big day of painting.

Then the full army of hopefully hundreds of volunteers will be mobilised and the school will be painted in a single day.

The scheme is the brainchild of local businessman who heard about a similar project in Adelaide, South Australia.

The businessman, who wishes to remain anonymous, a former pupil of the school, said: “I want to get members of the community together to show that we care about the school, and to give something back.

“The One Project will transform the environment for today’s children, leave a lasting legacy and bring the people of Ash Green together.”

Volunteers are being asked to come forward now so all the preparations can be made in good time.

“It’s a huge task and we are going to be holding a training day in February for people to help co-ordinate different teams that will be working in different parts of the school.”

To get the ball rolling, King’s Community Church in Bedworth has offered to help co-ordinate the volunteers on 024 7649 4320. Details about the project are available at http://www.kingscc.co.uk

Graham Tyrer, Acting Headteacher at Ash Green School, said: “This is tremendously exciting for all of us. We normally have to make do and mend where best we can and the chance to have the whole school decorated in a week is a generous offer and one that we are all looking forward to. I hope that families of current pupils, former pupils and neighbours of the school will all pitch in for this extraordinary project.”
