Drop in for dyslexia advice
Families in Leamington who have children with dyslexia can get free advice and support at regular drop-in sessions in the town.
A drop-in centre has been opened at Sydenham Primary School by Warwickshire County Council in partnership with the Leamington and District Dyslexia Association.
Families will be able to go along to meet others who have children with learning differences such as dyslexia.
They will be able to share each other’s experiences and get advice from professional workers. Parents and carers will be able to understand how they can support their children, while people based in schools will be shown resources available to help them in the classroom.
The aim of the first session, which is from 1.30pm to 5pm on 31 January 2006, is to find out what support parents and families need.
Special workshops will then be arranged to give support, training and advice to match those needs.
Dot Ward, of Warwickshire County Council’s Dyslexia Strategy Team, said: “There are lots of things that families can do to help a child with dyslexia. There are activities they can do to help them read, help them find ways to better remember things, and to raise their confidence and self-expectation. Quite often children with dyslexia feel isolated and these support sessions will help their families encourage them with their learning.
“Parents and families quite often do not know where to turn for advice and the aim of these sessions is to reassure them that help is at hand and that there are people in a similar situation. By bringing them together we will be able to find out what difficulties they experience and help them.”
A similar drop-in centre has opened in Bedworth and proved a great success and organisers are hoping the Leamington centre will also be a hit. More information is available by calling 01926 431389.
The centres are being opened as part of Warwickshire County Council’s Dyslexia Friendly Strategy. The Council’s Education Department was recently awarded the British Dyslexia Association’s Dyslexia Friendly Quality Mark – one of only five counties in the country to achieve this accolade.
