Libraries secure future of George Eliot letters

Warwickshire Libraries have been successful in getting funding to make sure that the public can have greater access to a unique set of letters written by author, George Eliot.

The letters have been professionally conserved to ensure that the original manuscripts will be preserved for future generations of historians, researchers and Eliot enthusiasts.

To enable the public to have access to these unique letters a set of facsimiles have been produced. These will be held Nuneaton Library, which also holds the prestigious George Eliot collection, where they will be available for consultation by the public.

The funding has been obtained from the MLA West Midlands (the regional council for Museums, Libraries and Arts). The original letters will be held in the Warwickshire County Record Office where they will be stored in environmental conditions in line with British standards.

Jane Sutton, Nuneaton Local Studies Librarian said: “We are delighted with this opportunity to allow people to study these letters which until now have only been available under strict conditions.

“Warwickshire Libraries are pleased that they can offer even more people the opportunity of viewing this unique insight into the author’s life whilst storing it an appropriate environment.”
