Strictly ballroom - for kids
Dance fever has taken off at a school in Kenilworth and ten-year-old Abigail is now looking for the perfect partner.
Following the success of television programmes such as Strictly Come Dancing, ballroom dancing has had a renaissance amongst adults.
And youngsters are getting into the craze now, with Warwickshire County Council’s Central Warwickshire Music Centre laying on dance lessons for children in Years 4 to 7.
The weekly sessions are held after school at Park Hill Junior School in Kenilworth, and are open to youngsters from Kenilworth, Leamington and Warwick.
Lessons focus on ballroom and latin dancing but also stretch to other styles such as line-dancing.
One of the big challenges facing the dancers is getting enough boys to take part. Abigail, a pupil at Park Hill, is loving the lessons but it takes two to tango and like many of her dancing friends, is having to dance as boy from time to time.
”At the moment we’ve got more girls than boys,” said Gill Walker from the County Music Service. “But it’s a great opportunity for boys to have some fun and to learn something that will no doubt come in useful in later life.
“Ballroom dancing has really surged in popularity because of the TV exposure it has had and we’re giving children in central Warwickshire the chance to learn the moves themselves.”
