Can you care for disabled children?
A pilot scheme has been launched in Warwickshire so children who are wheelchair users or have complex health needs can have a break.
And Warwickshire County Council is now hunting for carers who are willing to have their houses adapted so they can join the scheme.
The aim of the Family Link Contract Carers Scheme is to have carers who can work with several children over a long period of time, providing breaks mostly at weekends and in the school holidays.
The breaks give parents of children with disabilities the chance to recharge their batteries, and the children themselves the opportunity to have new experiences and make new friends.
Carers would be paid £400 a week over a five year contract, and would receive help with the adaptation of their home.
People interested in the scheme would have to meet all the requirements for becoming a foster carer in the county.
Bob Clark, Family Link Team Leader, said: “Previously the Family Link scheme has involved carers working with just one child and providing a break maybe once a month.
“This is a pilot scheme that will see carers take children into their home more regularly, and to work with children who previously could not be accommodated because their needs mean they need to be in houses that have to be adapted. We are looking for carers who will make a long term commitment to helping children with disabilities and provide an essential service to families.”
