Trees shoot up in Nuneaton
Life at Michael Drayton Junior School is about to get leafier with the planting of three impressive new trees.
Life at Michael Drayton Junior School is about to get leafier with the planting of three impressive new trees.
The 12 foot saplings are being planted as part of a scheme to promote sustainable development in schools.
Senior managers in Warwickshire County Council’s Education department were each given £250 by County Education Officer Eric Wood to promote sustainable development in schools
Strategic Planning Manager Andrew Leech selected Michael Drayton because the school had been due to lose a number of trees that were threatening to destroy a playground.
Those trees might now be saved as there are proposals being prepared to convert part of the playground to a soft play area.
The two oaks and an ash are going to be planted at the school with the children getting involved.
Andrew said: “These trees will really add to the school grounds and it will be fascinating for the children to see how they are planted and watch them grow during the time at the school.”
Headteacher John Buxton said: “We are always looking forward to chances to improve the school grounds and we are grateful that we have been chosen to be part of this scheme. We have nice grounds but one of the problems is a lack of shade and over time these new trees will address that. I am pleased that these new trees are indigenous to the area and are similar to species at Hartshill Hayes Country Park, which is nearby. The children will enjoy the planting and monitoring their progress over time.”
