Lessons in fire safety for Birchwood children
Children from Birchwood Primary School have been learning about fire safety as part of Warwickshire’s Fire and Rescue Services schools programme.
Firefighters from Coleshill have been teaching children aged between nine and ten about the importance of fire safety in the home. The children also received hands on experience of how to test a smoke alarm, a lesson in the dangers of hoax calls, a crash course in how to stop, drop and roll and a talk about how to plan escape routes in both the home and at school.
Firefighter, Tim Watson said:
“The main aims of the session are to teach children about basic fire safety highlighting key safety messages such as ‘stop, drop and roll’. The lessons also provide the perfect opportunity for the children to get hands on experience at making 999 calls and working together to plan how they would get out of their school or home should there be a fire.”
Headteacher of Birchwood Primary School, Mrs Tissbigus said:
“We are really pleased that the children are able to develop their fire safety skills through the schools programme. Lessons like this help the children learn life saving skills, which can be adapted to both the home and school environment.”
