Finalists of the bookworm’s battle announced
Children from schools across Warwickshire are battling to be crowned champions of the Schools Library Service Shield in the annual literary contest organised by Warwickshire County Council’s Library and Information Service.
Over 30 schools entered this year; the eleventh of the competition, and teams from primary schools (Year 6) will compete to be the 2006 Warwickshire champions of the book quiz.
The teams have competed in a series of elimination rounds to reach the final, which consists of twelve rounds, four on general children’s fiction and eight on selected titles.
The quiz covers everything from classics to contemporary writers and focuses on four core works; Millions by Frank Cottrell Boyce, The Star of Kazan by Eva Ibbotson, The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tiler by Gene Kemp and The Wreck of the Zanzibar by Michael Morpurgo.
The finalists are St Nicholas Primary School, Kenilworth (Central Area), Wolston St Margaret’s Primary School (East Area), Water Orton Primary School (North Area), St Nicolas Primary School, Nuneaton (Nuneaton/Bedworth Area) and Welford-On-Avon Primary School (South Area). They will receive individual prizes as well as the prestigious trophy inscribed with their school name.
Angela Ballard, Schools Library Service Joint Manager said:
“The competition originated to raise standards of literacy across the county but has now become a regular fixture in our schools. It’s a chance for young people to explore books that they may never have thought about before and encourage them to develop their literacy skills in a rewarding and fun environment.”
