Copse bursts to life in Southam
Young green fingers will be getting busy this week when children at Southam Junior School plant a new copse.
Three whitebeam trees are being planted in the school grounds along with silver birch, wild cherry and rowan saplings.
The trees have been donated by Stella Blackmore, who retired as Deputy County Education Officer in January after a long career serving schools in the county. Southam Junior School received the copse from the Woodland Trust.
Senior managers in Warwickshire County Council’s Education department were each given £250 by County Education Officer Eric Wood to promote sustainable development in schools
Stella has split her money with Southam Junior School and an environmental project supporting efforts to remedy the effect of the Tsunami in south-east Asia in 2004.
Headteacher Jennifer Jackson said: “The chance to improve a part of the school ground is welcome and the children will enjoy being involved with the planting. We are very grateful to be selected to be part of the county council’s scheme and are lucky to receive the saplings from the Woodland Trust. Once the saplings are established the children will be able to monitor their progress and the wildlife they will attract to the grounds.”
