Closure threat lifted from Bishop Wulstan

Proposals to close Bishop Wulstan Catholic School in Rugby have been withdrawn by Warwickshire County Council’s Cabinet.

At its meeting today, Cabinet agreed to endorse the recommendation of the Rugby Area Committee that the threat of closure be lifted.

Instead, the proposal of the Archdiocese of Birmingham to create a new Catholic Academy serving children aged between three and 16 in the town will be explored in greater detail.

Clllr John Burton, cabinet member for Schools, said: “The consultation has taken place, resulting in the school, church and the people of Rugby indicating that they wish to see Bishop Wulstan continue. It is clear that there is a great deal of support and that alternatives should be considered.

“The reports into the future were made with the best interests of the students as the primary motivation. From this, innovative proposals have been developed and the community of Rugby has embraced the issue. We are now going to move forward with looking at ways of maintaining secondary Catholic education in the town, be it through an academy or through other measures.”
