Sonia hears the beat of African drums

Children in Rugby will be getting into an African rhythm today as part of a day dedicated to the arts.

Year 7 pupils at The Harris School in Rugby will be writing poetry, learning dance, playing music and creating art in a day with an African theme.

They will spend the day working with professional artists before coming together to celebrate and share their achievements.

Enjoying the art and the performances will be Sonia Leibrandt from Cape Town in South Africa. Sonia recently retired as a headteacher and welcomed a delegation from Warwickshire to her school last year.

She is now working for a charity called Imibala, which raises money to help children from townships attend school. Imibala helps pay for uniforms, school fees and equipment. Schools in Warwickshire and staff at Warwickshire County Council are supporting the charity with a number of fund-raising events.

Acting assistant headteacher Catherine Barnett said: “It will be fabulous to have Sonia here. She is currently visiting Warwickshire and we were thrilled to hear that we can welcome her to Harris. She is an inspirational figure and her presence will help encourage the students on what will be a creative and exciting day. The day is inspired by the vitality of African culture and history, and will be a stimulating and fulfilling time for everybody.”
