Building on skills in Rugby

The launch event of a brand new construction skills centre in the heart of Rugby is to take place on Thursday at its site on the Webb Ellis Industrial Estate, Rugby.

The new development on the Webb Ellis Industrial Park is thanks to a joint venture between Rugby Borough Council, Warwickshire County Council and Warwickshire College – Rugby Centre and is based on the very successful partnership model that opened in Nuneaton in September 2003 and has assisted over 200 people to date in gaining construction skills.

Known as The Rugby Opportunities Centre, this project will provide essential foundation level training in five key construction areas, equipping all who attend with the skills they need to either work in the industry or to engage in higher level training.

Chair of Warwickshire County Council, Councillor Gordon Collett will be officiating the launch. He said: “This exciting venture will bring so much to those people in Rugby who are struggling to secure full time employment in the construction industry, young and old alike, we are very pleased to play an integral part in its development.”

One of the speakers on the day is Craig Johnson, an ex trainee from Nuneaton Opportunities Centre. He went into a work placement and subsequent employment as a result of him attending the Nuneaton centre and is now returning as part of a contractor team undertaking some extension building works.

Other speakers include David Disbury – Chair of Governors, Warwickshire College and Clare Hall – Regional Training Advisor Lovell Partnership Ltd with whom we are in partnership to place 12 young people each year directly onto their urban village re-development site in Camp Hill.  These young people are then given encouragement after 9 months of work experience with Lovells, to apply to their Craft Academy to take up the cosseted apprenticeships that the company offer.
