Summer start for Leamington works

Early summer will see works get underway for the next phase of the Leamington Urban Mixed Priority Scheme.

Works are planned to resume on 5th June to carry out Phase 2 of the scheme. Construction works were suspended in October 2005 to minimise disruption to the town during the Christmas period and have been re-scheduled to start when longer daylight hours are available and weather conditions more favourable for this type of work.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Cabinet member for Environmental Services, said: “The works are to complete the improvements to the town centre, which is to make the town centre streets safer for all users and provide a more pleasant environment.

“There will be disruption during the works, particularly as a result of the planned road closures, and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause to those living and working in the town, and those visiting.”

The works to be carried out during this summer will be on the lower part of the Parade adjacent to Jephson Gardens, Victoria Terrace, Bath Street and Spencer Street. These involve widening footways, raising platforms at pedestrian crossing points, updating traffic signals, reducing street furniture and road signs and creating a 20mph speed limit.

At the same time, the roads will be resurfaced and the footways will be repaved.  New street lighting and seating will also be installed

Unfortunately due to the nature of the works within the town centre, Warwickshire County Council, on the advice of the Health and Safety Executive, has been forced to initiate road closures during the construction works to safeguard the publics’ safety.

There will be road closures throughout the construction of the works.  Bath Street will be closed to vehicles for a period of 12 weeks and Victoria Terrace will be closed to southbound traffic for the duration of the works.  Traffic diversions will be put in place to direct traffic onto alternative routes while these roads are closed.  The works are expected to take 13 weeks to construct.
