Study Scalextric at new Leamington university

A new base has opened in Leamington for youngsters who want to take part in the Warwickshire Children’s University.

Campion School and Community College in Sydenham Drive will be opening its doors to primary age children to take part in a number of different out-of-school activities.

Campion, which was recently awarded specialist status in Business and Enterprise with Visual Arts, will be allowing children to use its state-of-the-art facilities.

Children can study different topics in modules, and can work their way up to a bronze, silver or gold award from the Warwickshire Children’s University, which is run by Warwickshire County Council.

It is the first time that a school in the area has established itself as a base for youngsters from different schools to use in this way. A number of primary schools run their own sessions but others lack the facilities.

And because sessions planned for the Easter holidays have proved so popular, more are being offered.

Animation courses will now be available on every day. A Scalextric championship will run and a hot air balloon constructed.

In addition to these activities there will be:

Blow and Paint Eggs – Really get in the Easter spirit by creating your own stylised Easter basket. Children can decorate eggs in whatever way takes their fancy.

Easter Bonnet Making – Try a reinvention of the traditional Easter bonnet craft with a contemporary Hybrid twist. Children can make hot-off-the-catwalk style bonnets to be the envy of their friends, or create a classic Easter themed creation if they choose.

Animation – Children can experience stock frame animation, involving making plastecine models, backgrounds and scenery to tell a story based around Easter themes of a hybrid innovation.

Compose and Record Music – Children have the chance to make and record their own music and take a CD of their work home. This is a once in a lifetime treat for all wannabe superstars out there!

Mask Making – From traditional operatic designs to luscious and mysterious Venetian creations, or even Easter themes, mask making really sets the imagination on fire. Children can use an inspiring array of materials to create their own individual masks to wear at home.

Corsage Making – Create beautiful and fashionable flowers using gorgeous materials such as felt, ribbons and beads, ready-to-wear to wear on jackets, bags, tops or whatever you like!

Peg Fairies – This timeless activity is classic fun. Children can make the peg doll of their choice – crazy clothes, multicoloured hair - the only limit is their imagination. They can re-create their favourite celebrity, or even themselves!

Sessions will take place from 9.00am – 4.30pm on 10th 11th 12th 13th April and 18th 19th 20th 21st April, at a cost of £20 per day or £70 for 4 days.

The workshops are the result of a collaboration between Hybrid:arts, the Warwickshire Children’s University and Campion Business, Enterprise and Visual Art Specialist College.

Headteacher Andrew Chubb said: “Campion has some outstanding facilities which are much appreciated by our students and by getting involved in the Children’s University in this way, other pupils in the area will be able to make use of them. There are other projects that will engage the school with people in the local area – for example we are doing a lot of work with Leamington’s Portuguese community.

“This is yet another exciting development at the school which has been booming since we were awarded specialist status last year.”

Stella Bolitho, Extended Learning Manager for Warwickshire County Council, added: “This is an opportunity for your child to experience the innovative creativity and unique artistic vision that Hybrid:arts can offer, within the professional environment of the Campion School studio. This will be a fun and memorable experience, giving a contemporary twist to Easter 2006.”
