A Junk Monster Challenge

A roaring good time is being had in schools as youngsters discover how reusing waste materials can be good fun thanks to a partnership between car giants Peugeot and Warwickshire County Council.

Key Stage 2 pupils from twenty schools in the Warwick, Stratford and Rugby Districts have been presented with a `Junk Monster Challenge’ prior to attending WCC’s Sustainability Day 4 Schools (SD4S).

The youngsters have been presented with a `junk box’ filled with industrial packaging and car items from Biffa at PSA Peugeot Citroen’s Ryton plant.  All of the items in the box are fully recyclable and it is down to the children’s vivid imaginations to come up with the most unusual, scary, or friendly Junk Monsters.

The art pieces will be exhibited at SD4S, which is due to be held at Ryton Pools Country Park over two days in May.  More than 600 children will attend this exciting, interactive and informative event, which will teach children about the need to live sustainably.  Peugeot are major sponsors of the event and will be running an activity as part of the day’s entertainment.

Cllr Martin Heatley, the county council’s portfolio holder for the Environment, said: “This is a great way to teach children about being sustainable both at home and at school.  Each year SD4S gets bigger and better, and I’m delighted with the support of Peugeot and Biffa, and would like to thank them for all their commitment and enthusiasm.’’

Bob Fenton, Communications Manager at PSA Peugeot Citroen’s Ryton Plant, said: "We are delighted to be working with Warwickshire County Council on the SD4S project.  At the Ryton plant we take our environmental responsibilities very seriously and recycling is a very important part of our operations.

“I hope that the ‘Junk Monster’ project, and the whole SD4S experience, helps the children to understand the importance of environmental issues."
