Complimentary Centenary Garden for Nursery Hill Primary School
Work is underway on a new ‘Discovery’ garden at Nursery Hill Primary in Nuneaton to celebrate the school’s centenary year.
The garden, which is being installed free of charge by Cleanaway Landscapes, is due to be completed in time for the celebrations this summer.
The project was set in motion last year when Amelia Cliffe, an accredited school grounds facilitator with Warwickshire County Council, carried out a consultation and designed a masterplan for the school garden. The area has been designed to give the pupils a range of sensory experiences including textures, colours, fragrances and sounds.
Cleanaway, who currently hold the County contract for school grounds’ maintenance, were keen to be involved as they were looking for a project that could be developed as part of the company’s entry for a BALI (British Association of Landscape Industries) award later this year.
Val Squires, head teacher at Nursery Hill Primary, said: “We are really pleased that Cleanaway are installing the garden for free; it has saved our volunteers many weekends of work and it would have taken us a long while to save up to install it all. The County Council has been extremely helpful in drawing up the original plans and in bringing us together with Cleanaway.
Our opening is on Thursday 8th June when the children will put on a short performance. They have been working with an opera singer and musician on work inspired by the garden.”
Dennis Wood, Cleanaway’s Operations Manager for the Midlands & North, said: “Cleanaway Landscapes have been looking at several ways of being ‘interactive’ with schools wherever possible. This project is a wonderful opportunity for Cleanaway to be involved with the local environment and gives us the pathway to put something back into the local schools within Warwickshire. It is an ideal opportunity for us to demonstrate our commitment and long term objectives to our ‘end user’. We look forward to the success of this and many more such initiatives.”
