Market collapse hits plastic recycling

An expanded plastics recycling scheme has been scrapped in Warwickshire following a collapse in the market.

In a bid to help residents recycle even more plastics Warwickshire County Council has worked in partnership with a new contractor H. W. Martin since December 2005 to increase the range of plastics that can be recycled.

However, the collapse of the market means that this is currently no longer possible, and Warwickshire County Council is to resume recycling of just PET (No1) Soft drink bottles and HDPE (No2) Milk and detergent bottles–(both should be washed and with bottle tops removed).

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Cabinet member for Environmental Services, said: “Since December we have worked in partnership with the new contractor responsible for the operation of six of Warwickshire’s household recycling centres with the expanded plastic recycling facilities available at Princes Drive, Cherry Orchard, Grendon, Shipston, Wellesbourne and Stockton.

”This meant people could recycle carrier bags, food containers and all bottle lids and it is a credit to the residents of Warwickshire that this scheme has proved to be so popular.

“Unfortunately the contractor has informed us that we can no longer accept the additional plastics collected and we are returning to recycling soft drinks bottles (PET, No1) and milk containers and detergent bottles (HDPE, No2) for the foreseeable future.

“In Warwickshire we are constantly striving to offer a comprehensive recycling service, and residents can rest assured we will be monitoring this situation very closely. Watch this space as we work with our contractors and endeavour to improve recycling and disposal facilities in Warwickshire.”
