Chipping away at waste
Warwickshire County Council’s free home wood chipping service is continuing to prove popular with householders.
Some 6,463 customers have used the service since it started in 2003. This generated 132,278 bags of mulch, preventing more than 3,300 tonnes of green waste from being buried in the ground at landfill.
Warwickshire County Council recognises that green garden waste is a useful resource for gardeners. This service has allowed residents to have their own prunings chipped up at their home and then made the chippings for available for mulching their garden – saving the cost of buying garden mulch as well as minimising the waste going into the county’s waste stream.
Cllr Martin Heatley, Portfolio Holder for Environment, Transport and Rural Affairs, said: “We are very pleased that this service has be so popular since it was introduced. There are sound environmental reasons for keeping your chipped green waste and using it in the garden, and this is why we have continued to provide this service free of charge.
“It is also important to divert green waste away from landfill as this can be damaging to the environment as it is a major source of methane gas, a greenhouse gas thought to contribute to climate change, if it is left to decompose in this way.”
Bookings of this service can be made by telephone on 01926 738827, between 9.30am and 12.30 pm.
