Vera takes the plunge
Ninety-eight year old Warwickshire resident, Vera Johnson is still enjoying a swim years after winning medals in her teens.
Vera recently took a dip in Atherstone swimming pool – the last time she swam was on her 90th birthday with her great-grandaughter, Jade and Jade’s mum Jannine.
Vera was brought up in Castleford, near Leeds and it was her teacher at school that persuaded her to enter her first ever swimming gala, in the relay race with three friends. With the cheers and support of everyone she went on to win many medals and trophies.
Vera joined Castleford Swimming Club where she took part in more contests and starting teaching younger members of the club.
Christine Jenking, Activity and Leisure Co-ordinator at Bracebridge Court, said
“Vera almost always came first in the swimming competitions she entered when she was young. She has shown that she is still a remarkably talented swimmer after all these years, completing three lengths of breaststroke!”
