Calling young drivers!

If you are aged between, 18 – 24 and drive on the roads in North Warwickshire, then Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service need to hear from you!

In response to concerns about the high rate of serious accidents amongst young drivers, WFRS are running a range of unique driver training courses, which aim to improve driving skills and enhance the knowledge of young people who drive on rural roads.

Station Manager, Dave Hewston said:
“What we are looking for is for young drivers aged between 18 –24 with at least six months driving experience to take part in an advanced driving course which starts on Saturday 6 May. The course is free and students taking part will attend an induction day at Coleshill Fire Station, as well as training sessions with both the Police and the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).”

The courses, which are run in conjunction with Warwickshire Police and the IAM cover advanced driving techniques, hazard perception and highlight the consequences of accidents and poor driving.  Students also travel out in police cars with the Police Driving Instructors to demonstrate their advanced driving techniques out on the road.

Following the induction each of the students will spend a further day with Advanced Driving Instructors from the IAM followed by taking the Institute’s Advanced Driving test a few weeks later. Successful students will then become full members of The Institute of Advanced Motorists.

Applicants must hold a full driving licence and have access to an insured car in which to take their Advanced Driving Test. If you’re thinking of putting forward your son, daughter or mates please make sure that they fully support the nomination, as students will only be successful if committed to practising the advanced driving techniques covered on the course.

Interested students should register by sending their name, address, contact telephone number and age to Warwickshire Fire and Rescue service at NWART@warwickshire.gov.uk

There is no cost to the student for this course. The Fire service has been fortunate in securing funding for these courses, which normally cost over £200 for each student.

Applications need to be received by 20th April. Places are limited but the Fire Service would like to hear from as many interested students as possible.
