Helping travellers stay on track
Warwickshire County Council, in partnership with Central Trains, Chiltern Railways and Network Rail, has begun a package of railway station improvements that will improve journeys for rail users in the county.
The works are now underway and should be completed by the end of next month.
Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Cabinet member for Environmental Services, said: “The improvements are part of the county council’s commitments to provide rail users with a better waiting environment, better facilities, better information and increased security.”
Travellers at Warwick will benefit from a new, larger, shelter on the Birmingham-bound platform and an extension of the stairway roof on the London-bound platform.
At Leamington Spa the subway lighting will be upgraded as an ‘add-on’ to a Chiltern Railways station development scheme.
There will also be significant improvements to cycle facilities at Leamington Spa to cater for the increasing number of people cycling to the station and to encourage more people to combine cycling with journeys by train, helping to cut congestion and pollution. The number of cycle parking stands at the station will be more than doubled and all parking stands will be covered by CCTV, therefore offering a secure place for cyclists to leave their bikes. Five new cycle lockers will also be provided for those seeking total peace of mind.
At Hatton and Lapworth stations, additional CCTV cameras have been provided to increase passenger and car park security.
Cath Proctor, Managing Director of Chiltern Railways, said: “Chiltern Railways is committed to improving all aspects of our service for passengers. The additional CCTV, lighting, shelters and cycling facilities are great news for the growing number people using our trains. Working alongside Warwickshire County Council has ensured significant improvements to stations in the region.”
Stratford-upon-Avon will benefit from an improved real-time Customer Information system and both Stratford-upon-Avon and Henley-in-Arden will benefit from automated Public Announcements, helping to keep passengers informed.
Mike Haigh, Business Development Director of Central Trains, said: "We know that accurate and timely information is very important to our passengers. The improvements at Stratford and Henley are a key part of our commitment to providing improved station facilities, information and customer service. This is an excellent example of public and private sectors working together to deliver worthwhile schemes.”
Cllr Martin Heatley went on to say that: "The package of improvements is excellent news. I have no doubt that the improvements will make a real difference for the people who use these stations regularly. The involvement and support of Central Trains and Chiltern Railways has been crucial in delivering all these improvements and they would not be possible without their willingness to take on the management and long term maintenance of the new facilities.”
