Sadness at Peugeot closure announcement
The announcement of the closure of the largest manufacturing plant in Warwickshire at Ryton next year has been greeted with sadness by Cllr Chris Saint, Warwickshire County Council’s Cabinet member for Economic Development.
He said: “It is so disappointing to hear of this new blow to manufacturing jobs in Warwickshire. We had been warned by Peugeot, months ago, about the threat to the plant but it is still a blow, a specially hard one to those whose jobs are disappearing. Our particular sympathy is for them at the moment and in the months ahead.
“For the future, the county council will be supporting the work of Job Centre Plus and other partners including Advantage West Midlands and Coventry City Council to work with Peugeot to find jobs for the workforce.
“In the longer term we are confident that with successful investments like Land Rover and Aston Martin at Gaydon and the potential for new developments by Prodrive in Warwickshire, we will continue to have at least our fair share of developing businesses at the leading edge of automotive technology.
“As far as the council itself is concerned we will be renewing our efforts at securing more new inward investments that will diversify and modernise what is already the most successful economy in the West Midlands.”
