A transport of delight!
Did romance blossom for you when working on the buses? Do you remember your first car trip to the seaside, have memories of building the motorways or working on the line at Rover or Austin Healey? Perhaps you are passionate about restoring vintage vehicles?
If so, we want to hear about your Warwickshire transport memories.
Warwickshire is rich in transport history – from Roman roads through canals to motorways and through generations of people our landscape, and our lives, have been transformed.
To celebrate this rich heritage many of the county’s museums and heritage centres are running events in May under the banner ‘Around Warwickshire in 20 Ways’. During the month there will be lots of family events, competitions and trails. Our very own Phileas Fogg and Passepartout will be touring the county and dropping in at events and trying to travel on as many different forms of transport as they can.
Glynis Powell, Community Museums Officer for Warwickshire and Coventry said,
“The month is going to be great fun, there are over 12 different places taking part. It’s amazing just how much transport heritage still survives and is cared for!
But it’s not just about the objects, it’s people’s passions that make the difference. We want to gather memories and stories as a way of celebrating and exploring how our lives have been changed and affected.”
Warwickshire Museums Service, working with BBC Coventry and Warwickshire and the Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon, will be co-ordinating the memory project.
The first part of the project will be to gather stories both by email and on paper at the events during May, many of these will then be published in a celebratory book. From July 2006 the Heritage Motor Centre will takeover gathering stories and will concentrate on motor transport and it is hoped that an exhibition will travel the round the county in 2007.
If you have a story to tell already, you can post it on to the website at http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/20ways or email it to transportsofdelight@warwickshire.gov.uk.
