Crucial kerbside training
Youngsters aged between 4 and 5 from Sydenham Primary School in Leamington have signed up to potentially lifesaving kerbside coaching thanks to Warwickshire County Council’s KerbSafe Scheme.
KerbSafe is a practical initiative developed to help make young children safer when they are out and about near busy roads.
It comprises practical roadside sessions with adult volunteer instructors and introduces children to the basic skills they need to become more aware of the risks they could face such as parked cars and unsafe places to cross the road.
Stan Milewski, Senior Road Safety Officer said: “I’m delighted that the school has adopted the KerbSafe scheme as it is an important and effective way of introducing very young children to road safety. It’s vital for children of this age to be aware of the potential hazards around them – KerbSafe provides them with hands-on experience in a safe, secure environment.”
Mrs. Juliette Westwood, Headteacher of the school said: “ KerbSafe is an important life skill for children to learn and the benefits with this scheme are that they can actually go out into the local environment and put into practice what they have learnt. The teachers taking part in KerbSafe thoroughly enjoy the sessions which complement the work the Road Safety Unit do in the school.”

Notes for editors:
Even after KerbSafe training, it is still essential for children of this age to cross roads under the supervision of a responsible adult.
Accidents in Warwickshire can be combated by a variety of means; education and training, publicity, engineering measures and enforcement. We believe the most effective approach is an integrated one so that the different methods and partnership working are used together wherever possible.
