Get to Kingsbury ker-wik to see rare bird

Bird spotters are descending on North Warwickshire’s Kingsbury Water Park following the confirmed sighting of a Gull-Billed Tern, a bird never before witnessed at the park.

A member of the public reported the sighting of the bird to a ranger, and the bird’s identity was confirmed by the ranger and reported to national experts.

Sally Silk, Warwickshire’s Country Parks’ Manager, said: “I’ve never known of one here in the park before, in fact the bird is rarely spotted in Great Britain. It’s already causing great excitement in bird watching groups.”

The Gull-Billed Tern is a fairly large and powerful tern, similar in size and general appearance to a Sandwich Tern, but the short thick gull-like bill, broad wings, long legs and robust body are distinctive. The summer adult has grey upperparts, white underparts, a black cap, strong black bill and black legs. The call is a characteristic ker-wik.

The bird was spotted at Cliff Pool at the Broomey Croft entrance to Kingsbury Water Park.
