Plucky children rewarded for commitment

Children in care in Warwickshire have had a boost from a fund set up in memory of a county social worker.

Rob Barradell was the fostering and adoption service manager and worked for Warwickshire County Council until his death in 2000 at the age of 53.

A fund set up in his memory makes awards every year to help children in care. The Barradell Fund for Looked-After Children supports the efforts and achievements of young people either in Warwickshire’s care or on a care order living with parents.

The awards are made to children who have made an extra effort to get involved in their community, or by showing a long term commitment to a particular sport by taking part in an activity for a long period of time.

Others are given the awards to congratulate them for overcoming previous difficulties and showing a marked improvement in their behaviour and performance at school.

Their achievement is being marked with a boat trip for all award winners on the river Avon in Stratford.

Chris Hallett, Head of Children in Need at Warwickshire County Council, said: “The young people and their carers should be proud of what they have done. These young people have shown that they have the dedication and commitment to overcome difficulties that life has presented them, and these awards are a way of acknowledging that while fondly remembering a colleague.“
