Putting youngsters on road to safety

Around 2,500 Warwickshire children aged 10 and 11 will be converging on the Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon next week to attend an important road safety event organised by Warwickshire County Council.

The award-winning open-air event this year expands from three to four days as `Live and Dangerous’ highlights the potential dangers on the roads at a time when youngsters are preparing to move on from primary to secondary school in September.

This year, a series of exciting road safety scenarios will feature:
· Evacuating a coach – hands-on tips on what to do in an emergency
· How to keep safe whilst cycling to school
· The need to be safe and environmentally friendly when walking to school
· The importance of wearing a seatbelt and not distracting the driver
· Planning a safer route to school on unfamiliar roads

The event gets underway on Tuesday and continues through until Friday and each day it will conclude with an innovative road safety finale. This has been written and directed, and will be performed, by drama students from Stratford on Avon College.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Cabinet member for Environmental Services, said: “Many of these children will have to face new and sometimes dangerous journeys on their way to a new school.  Live and Dangerous will provide them with a safe and controlled environment to learn about road safety situations they may not have had to deal with before.”

67 Schools from across Warwickshire will be taking part in this year’s event.
