Imminent start for Leamington works

Work gets underway on Monday the second phase of a project aimed at making Leamington’s town centre streets safer and a more pleasant environment.

Phase 2 of the Leamington Urban Mixed Priority Scheme gets started on Monday and should take around 13 weeks to complete, with works carried out by Carillion JM (formerly Mowlem).

The works to be carried out will be on the lower part of the Parade adjacent to Jephson Gardens, Victoria Terrace, Bath Street and Spencer Street. These involve repaving and widening footways, resurfacing the road, raising platforms at pedestrian crossing points, updating traffic signals and street lighting, reducing street furniture and road signs and creating a 20mph speed limit.

The following road closures will be necessary during the construction works to safeguard safety of the public. Traffic diversions will be put in place to direct traffic onto alternative routes while these roads are closed.

On 12th June for 1 week, Newbold Terrace will be closed at its junction with the Parade, and Priory Terrace will be closed at its junction with Victoria Terrace.

From 19th June, Bath Street will be closed to traffic and Victoria Terrace and Spencer Street will be closed to southbound traffic for 12 weeks.  Some bus stops will be located in different locations, and bus routes will be altered.  These changes will be advertised by the bus operators.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Cabinet member for Environmental Services, said: “While the works are underway, pedestrian access will be maintained at all times to all shops and businesses, which will be open as usual.  Access will be available for delivery vehicles and residents’ vehicles.

“Some concern has also been expressed from students that bus routes could be effected, but I’d like to assure them that there will be no alterations to the existing timetable and routes during the first week of the works and the changes to come into force the following week will be announced shortly.”

Janet Alty, Chair of the Regenesis Board, said: “I welcome the start of this phase of the work, especially as the county council has agreed to include Bath Street in the programme.  The improvements to the environment in Victoria Terrace and Bath Street will continue the regeneration of the
Old Town area, and join up Old Town South of the river with `New Town’,
north of the river."

Cllr Heatley added: “There will be disruption during the works, particularly as a result of the planned road closures, and Warwickshire County Council apologises for any inconvenience this may cause to those living and working in, or visiting, the town.”
