Youth art for Lillington
Over 30 local residents from the Lillington area attended a meeting last week to hear about an exciting new arts project for their community.
The event, held at Lillington Library, was organised to give people the chance to find out more about proposed public artwork to be located in the heart of Lillington.
Young people from the Lillington Youth Centre will be producing the artwork, a project instigated by Warwickshire County Council’s Youth Service, and are keen to ensure that what they produce is what the local community wants to see.
Local clothes retailer The Designer Outlet supported the event by offering a £25 gift voucher as a draw prize into which all participants in the consultation event were entered. Local resident Mr. Kris Breslin of Telford Avenue, Lillington, won the prize.
The young people running the project surveyed local residents earlier this year and will be using the results of the event in developing their artwork, which is hoped to be unveiled later in the year.
Feedback from the meeting was positive and the most popular idea is a community bench. It will be a large sculptural bench with images of Lillington scanned on to it. Young people and residents will take photos of local people and images of Lillington and then transfer them to the bench.
Russ Marshall, age 16, said: “We thought of doing this art project a year ago and although its taken a long time to get to this point I am really pleased that the local community are behind the idea.”
Charlotte Liggins, age 14, said: “I am looking forward to starting this project. I think we can make Crown Way look fantastic.”
Hollie Hutchins, from the Lillington Youth Centre said: “The residents and young people are keen to work together and can’t wait for the project to get started. There have been lots of great ideas already and they will continue to work in partnership with the community as the project develops.
This should be a really exciting and useful piece of art. Who knows, residents might be sitting on a multi coloured photo of themselves by the end of the year!!”
