Driving down speeds in villages
A successful scheme in driving down the speed motorists head through villages is continuing this summer.
Since 2002 Warwickshire County Council has been carrying out a systematic review of village speed limits.
The Village Speed Limit Review considers all villages that do not have a 30mph speed limit and 22 villages have benefited from this review so far. Works for villages on ‘A’ class roads is completed. Monitoring of vehicle speeds taken after speed reduction measures were introduced indicate that speeds have been reduced by an average of 6mph.
The review of villages on ‘B’ class roads has commenced and villages treated so far as part of this review include: Cubbington, Gaydon, Gilson, Rowington, Shrewley Common and Withybrook. All have had reductions in their speed limits.
Over this summer the next batch of villages to have speed reduction works put in place include:·
Bidford on Avon - New 30mph & 40mph speed limits, improved village gateway signs, road narrowings and vehicle activated signs.
Corley - Extended 30 & 40mph speed limits, improved village gateway signs.
Curdworth - Improvements to the existing 40mph speed limit to achieve better driver compliance and improved village gateway signs.
Dunnington - This is a joint scheme with Safer Routes to Schools and includes a new 30mph speed limit and improved village gateway signs.
Hunningham - New 30mph speed limit, improved village gateway signs.
Furnace End - New 30mph speed limit, improved village gateway signs and vehicle activated signs.
Weston under Wetherley - New 30mph speed limit, improved village gateway signs and vehicle activated signs.
The opportunity will also be taken to reduce sign clutter where possible in these villages, removing old and redundant signage, thereby further improving the village environment.
Katrina Pedlar, Project Leader, said: “Public consultation is well underway on the remaining villages on the “B” roads and works will be undertaken once public consultation is completed.
“Initial investigation into villages without 30mph speed limits on ‘C’ class roads has also commenced. As the review progresses, we will be able to give more details about the timescale for dealing with particular places. So, we may be coming to a village near you in the future.”
