Historic move as Warwickshire planner is elected President of the County Surveyors’ Society
For the first time since it was established 121 years ago the County Surveyors’ Society (CSS) has chosen a planner as its President.
At a meeting of the society in London on Friday, 16th June, John Deegan the Strategic Director for Environment and Economy at Warwickshire County Council, was inaugurated to this honorary office which, until now, has been held by an engineer.
John Deegan, President of the County Surveyors’ Society, said: “By profession I am a planner and I have served as a member of CSS since 1994 when I joined Warwickshire County Council as Director of Planning and Transport.
“I think the society’s decision to appoint me as President reflects its role in representing local authorities with responsibility for strategic planning, transportation, the environment, waste management and economic development.”
Jim Graham, Chief Executive of Warwickshire County Council, said: “The county council is delighted that John has received this national recognition which is in no small measure due to his outstanding contribution to the work of the CSS over the past 12 years.
“Warwickshire has a proud tradition of supporting this and other influential professional institutions. In this way we ensure Warwickshire’s voice is heard regionally, nationally and also in Europe.
“During his Presidential year, John will continue his work as Warwickshire’s Strategic Director for Environment and Economy, supported by his staff and colleagues.”
Cllr Alan Farnell, Leader of Warwickshire County Council, said: “This is a great honour for John and also for Warwickshire County Council. The CSS will be well served during his term of office as will the people of Warwickshire, who can only benefit from the experience he gains in the job.”
