Teaching Awards trio celebrate excellence
The cream of the crop from Warwickshire’s schools have been rubbing shoulders with the Midlands elite at the Teaching Awards 2006.
Three representatives from the county were nominated to be acknowledged for their energy, passion and commitment to their jobs.
And their achievements were celebrated at a glittering ceremony at Ironbridge Museum last night.
Judy Brook of Bilton Infant School in Rugby was awarded a distinction in the Promethean Teaching Award for Headteacher of the Year in a Primary School category.
Nominated by parents and governors, the award reflected her lifelong commitment to education in the town. Judy said: “I was surprised to be nominated and absolutely delighted that the parents and the governors felt such confidence in the school to do so. I see this award as reflecting the fantastic work of the whole team here and I am thrilled for all of us.”
Maggi Armitage of Lawrence Sheriff School was handed a Commendation in the Teaching Award for Enterprise. Maggi forges links with other schools, partners and the community, promoting Lawrence Sheriff’s specialism in maths and ICT (Information and Communication Technology).
This allows other groups in the town to take advantage of the extra facilities and expertise to take advantage of expertise developed at Lawrence Sheriff. Maggi said: “I was very flattered to be nominated for this award. I really enjoy working around the town with a wide range of groups and to be acknowledged for this at a regional level is a real boost for me and the school.”
Carole Truman from Water Orton Primary School, who was awarded a distinction in the Teaching Assistant of the Year category, said she had thought it was a joke when she first was told she was nominated. “Once I read the whole letter and realised it wasn’t a wind-up I just cried. Just getting the letter was enough, knowing that people want to nominate you. The ceremony was really good, they made a real fuss of us – I just felt the whole school should have been there!”
Helen Whiter, Head of School Performance at Warwickshire County Council, said: “I’m delighted for Judy, Maggi and Carole that they have been acknowledged in this way. These awards demonstrate their commitment and high quality work, and also reflect the positive environment at their respective schools.”
