Prepared for danger
Moving on from primary to secondary school is one of the most exciting times in a child’s life, but it can also be one of the most dangerous too, especially as they will be travelling on unfamiliar roads for the first time.
As almost 60,000 ten and eleven year olds around the Midlands prepare to change schools in September, the Mercia Road Safety Officers Group – which comprises 14 local authorities – is launching its latest road safety campaign.
Local schools across Warwickshire will be taking part in the campaign, as Road Safety Officers from Warwickshire County Council distribute around 6,000 good luck cards and glow-in-the-dark wristbands to schools before the end of term.
The `Yeah but no but …’ campaign aims to warn youngsters of the dangers of travelling to their new school and give them tips on how to arrive safely. A series of colourful posters giving examples of how not to travel have already been sent to schools and pupils are being urged to discuss their new travel arrangements with their parents.
Stan Milewski, Chairman of the Mercia Road Safety Group said: “This is the first time we’ve tried this approach so I hope that by targeting each child individually we will get the message through that although they will be excited about going to a new school, they do need to be careful on unfamiliar roads. ”
