A cycling family win big during bike week

A dedicated cycling family is celebrating after picking up a prize as a result of activities organised by Warwickshire County Council and John Atkins Cycles of Leamington during National Bike Week.

Warwickshire County Council held a joint stand with Cycleways, a local cycle campaign group, and John Atkins, a Leamington based bike shop, at Leamington Peace Festival over the weekend of 17/18 June as part of this year’s National Bike Week campaign (17-25 June).

The stand promoted the benefits of cycling and county based cycle routes for all to enjoy. There was also a prize on offer courtesy of John Atkins for £100 worth of bike equipment.

Julie Coakley from Leamington Spa, was the lucky winner of the fantastic prize, and she said: “All of my family enjoy cycling and my daughter Rachel, who is 6 years old, has just learnt to ride, so she can enjoy the many off road routes such as The Greenway in Stratford upon Avon and Draycote Water with myself, my son Daniel and husband Michael.”

When asked what she would spend the money on Julie replied: “I’ll be getting a new bike for my husband as he needs it more than me.”

And the generous gesture will ensure the family can continue to enjoy their bike rides together.

Julie was one of more than 300 people who visited the stand, which attracted much interest over the two days. Entrants to the competition were asked to answer questions based on cycling issues and all answers could be found on the TravelWise and Cycleways displays.

Karen Martin, from Warwickshire County Council’s Sustainable Travel team, said: “Competitions at events like the Peace Festival are a great way of promoting the joys, benefits and local routes available for cycling. It allows us the opportunity to meet a cross section of the public, from families like the Coakleys who regularly cycle, to those who are interested in cycling again after a long break.”
