Better Buying in Warwickshire Wins Top Green Award
Despite stiff competition from public bodies all over the UK, Warwickshire County Council has won the GO Award for the `Greatest Procurement Contribution to the Environmental, Social and Sustainability Agenda’.
Representatives from the Warwickshire Sustainable Procurement Initiative (which looks at ways to reduce the harmful environmental impact of all the goods, works and services the council buys) joined more than 200 delegates in London earlier this month for National Public Procurement Practitioners Day (N3PD).
The event celebrated the success of those working within procurement in the UK and included the announcement of the eagerly awaited results of the annual Government Opportunities magazine Excellence in Public Procurement Awards, where Warwickshire was winner in the Greatest Procurement Contribution to the Environment, Social and Sustainability Agenda Award category.
The judging panel were impressed by the county council’s “professional and wholehearted approach to environmentally sound procurement. The results of this approach made for impressive reading and included acquiring 94 per cent of electricity needs from renewable sources. The winning entry has demonstrated effective collaboration and communication with a range of stakeholders, including suppliers and the public.”
Janet Chapman, County Environmental Procurement Officer, said: “Warwickshire County Council is delighted to have won the Government Opportunities Award for Sustainable Procurement. This is great recognition of the commitment of our members and officers to the sustainability agenda, and the innovative ways in which our staff have responded to the challenges of environmental procurement.”
The awards brought together representatives from local authorities, public services, utilities and community initiatives, recognising the efforts made to deliver ever-improving financial management and service provision. Benefits to the taxpayer through improved county council spending can mean lower bills for council tax payers.
GO (Government Opportunities) is a monthly magazine published by BiP Solutions for Government Ministers, MPs, government officers and companies in the private sector engaged in public procurement. For further information on the awards see http://www.n3pd.com
