Boccia gives youngsters chance for sporting fun

Disabled children from all over Warwickshire will be getting together next week for a sports tournament with a difference.

Guided by Stratford-based paralympic gold medallist Nigel Murray, they will be playing the boules-style game of Boccia.

The youngsters, are aged between seven and 13, and all have a physical disability. They are in mainstream schools and are supported by Warwickshire County Council’s Disability Inclusion, Sensory and Communication Service, which is organising the event.

Judith Wells of DISCS said: “This is a popular sport for disabled athletes and we are very fortunate to have Nigel, who lives in Stratford, coming along to help out. These children don’t always get the chance to compete in sport against other disabled youngsters because they are in mainstream schools. This event is partly a social occasion and the chance for them to have some fun.

The tournament takes places on 7 July at St Nicholas Leisure Centre in Warwick.
