New e-newsletter to highlight county’s past

An online newsletter with features as diverse as the county’s nineteenth century criminals, George Eliot’s letters or how the Roman lady applied her make up has been launched.

Warwickshire Reports, Warwickshire County Council’s local studies newsletter, has been officially launched with the inaugural edition highlighting the history, culture and rich archaeological tradition of the area.

Warwickshire Reports has a feature showing online visitors where to go to see if their ancestors had a criminal record.  The Calendar of Prisoners database contains records of those held in the county prisons for trial at the Courts of Assize and the Quarter Sessions held in Warwick.  It also points users in the direction of the contemporary local media to see the press cuttings of their ‘villainous’ forefathers.

Elsewhere, Warwickshire Reports features the displays of archaeological finds in the county’s museums.  A bronze pestle and mortar which dates back to around 100 AD and was used by Roman women to grind their cosmetics is showcased.

Other features include information on funding to preserve the George Eliot letters held in Nuneaton library and news on the county’s subscription to a website that will be of great help to the thousands of people researching their family histories.

Councillor Colin Hayfield, portfolio holder for Adult and Community Services, said:  “We are really pleased with the launch of this newsletter.  We hope that it is a great help to the many people interested in Warwickshire’s past and that it will also attract many more people to finding out about the county’s, or their own, history.”

Warwickshire Reports will be published bi-annually and is available online by following the link http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/localstudies
