Tigers, Footmen and Daggers perform a moonlight flit
Visitors to Warwickshire Museum in Market Place, Warwick, can come face to face with a giant four foot moth called Ollie as part of the latest exhibition.
Local moths are being featured at the museum in its summer exhibition titled ‘Tigers, Footmen and Daggers’.
The exhibition is being held to commemorate the recent publication of a book “The larger Moths of Warwickshire” by local moth expert David Brown. The exhibition provides a basic introduction to what a moth is, explains the life cycle of a moth, explains how some moths are friends whilst others are foes and tells you how you can get involved in moth recording and moth conservation.
Steven Falk, Senior Keeper of Natural History, said: "Moths are often viewed as eerie creatures of the night. But people often do not realise that they provide silk and help to pollinate many of our crops and fruit trees. Some moths and moth caterpillars are really stunning creatures, so we hope visitors to the exhibition will come away appreciating them a bit more.”
The exhibition runs until September 24 2006. It features a giant Oleander Hawkmoth model called Ollie with a 4ft wingspan, some live Indian Moon Moths on loan from Stratford Butterfly Farm and pinned specimens from the Museum’s natural history collection.
