Extracting Wolvey's past

Residents across Warwickshire are being called to action to help uncover Wolvey’s past and try to find a deserted medieval village, as part of Warwickshire Museum Field Service’s project Extracting Warwickshire’s Past

Extracting Warwickshire’s Past and the Wolvey Local History Group are looking for volunteers to come along to one of the area’s most interesting archaeological sites.

Wolvey and its surrounding area is littered with medieval remains. Copston Lodge Farm and its surrounding area is of particular interest and past investigations by the Wolvey Local History Group suggests there might be a deserted medieval village in the area. During the event, research will help identify whether this is true.

A day of hands on activities are planned to show, teach and involve local people in geophysical surveying (seeing beneath the surface) and fieldwalking (collecting archaeological material from the surface) whilst encouraging people to ask the experts to discover more about archaeology, their local history and heritage.

Christina Evans, archaeological project manager with Warwickshire County Council, said: “Wolvey is a fascinating area for and is an ideal site for amateur archaeologists or people who are interested in their area’s past.  We hope that people will take up this opportunity to have a really unusual, fascinating day.”

The event will be on Saturday 16 September from 11.00am to 4.00pm at Copston Lodge Farm.  Visitors should bring a packed lunch and wear suitable shoes.
