Harris hall nears green light

A new sports hall for Harris School in Rugby is getting closer with the final stages of preparation under way.

Warwickshire County Council’s Cabinet is to be asked to give the green light to appoint contractors next month so work on the £2.5 million scheme can start.

The development on unused land at the school in Harris Drive, Overslade Lane, will provide new facilities for the students to enjoy.

There will be tennis courts and indoor facilities including a national championship standard basketball court.

Headteacher Sue Simms said she couldn’t wait for the final stages of the tendering process to be completed.

“This hall has been a long time in the making and the entire school community is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the bulldozers and diggers.

“We currently only have a small gym that was built in the 1950s, and the pupils have to take most of their PE lessons outdoors, whatever the weather. The new sports hall will give us first class facilities that will allow us to offer our students far more activities, in much better conditions.”

Cllr John Burton, cabinet member for Schools, said: “There is no question that Harris deserves a new sports hall and I am glad that progress is being made on this project. The next stage is for Warwickshire County Council’s Cabinet to approve the contractors and I look forward to taking this to a meeting early next month.”
