Lantern Show of rare Warwickshire photos

Warwickshire County Record Office has acquired a collection of almost 1000 stereoscopic images and lantern slides from the early years of photography.

The collection contains many rare images of old Warwickshire dating back to the 1850’s.

The photographs were purchased from a local collector Philip Banham with the assistance of the Friends of Warwickshire Record Office, the Henry VIII Endowed Trust and the V&A Purchase Grant Fund.

Philip will present a Victorian Magic Lantern Show with slides of images from the collection projected through an authentic Brass and Mahogany Victorian Lantern. The show will take place at The Court House, Jury Street, Warwick on 29 September, starting at 8.00pm. Tickets are available for £10 from the Record Office with proceeds going towards the purchase of the collection.

Mr Banham will also be presenting a version of the show to local school children from Warwick as part of a creative writing activity day at the County Record Office.

Rob Eyre, Senior Archivist said
“The collection provides a valuable source of visual references for users of the record office and provides an opportunity to stimulate interest in Warwick’s past and attract new users”
