Don’t miss the facts on new parking arrangements

Special exhibitions are being staged in Rugby town centre next week to try and help more people to understand exactly how decriminalised parking will operate in the town.

On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, September 19, 20 and 21, the Warwickshire County Council exhibition will be in the Market Place to provide information on resident parking plans, new on-street pay and display machines for the town and many other changes coming into force in Rugby on October 2. On Friday, September 22, the exhibition will be near the main library in Little Elborow Street.

The decriminalisation of parking in Rugby means the enforcement of parking restrictions moves from the police and into local authority control.

This will see Warwickshire County Council implement a scheme, which will then be controlled and administered by Rugby Borough Council.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Cabinet member for Environmental Services, said: “It’s extremely important that everyone is aware of the changes coming in and how they will affect them. I would urge as many people as possible to attend the roadshow, keep an eye out for information delivered to their homes, or visit the borough or county council websites.

“By introducing decriminalised parking we can reduce the amount of traffic circulating in the town centre and on residential streets. This has environmental benefits by reducing exhaust fume levels in our town centres, while also improving opportunities for residents to park outside their homes.

“Other towns such as Northampton and Winchester have introduced similar schemes and have seen an increase in the vitality of their town centres. We want to ensure the economic vitality and sustainability of Warwickshire towns and this is an important step in that direction.”

Cllr Neil Campbell, Rugby Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Borough and Economic Development, said: “While new parking arrangements on the streets of Rugby are due to come into operation on 2nd October, the arrangements within the council run car parks will continue to be run as previously. To help people park easily and safely in Rugby, the council has 12 car parks in the town which are divided into short and long stay car parks.

” There are adequate spaces available for all motorists to park within Rugby as long as rules are followed. The new parking arrangements on the streets of Rugby are to ensure that these rules are not ignored.”
