Charity coffee morning preview
Warwickshire County Council’s political leaders have had a taster of the World’s Biggest Coffee morning to take place in a couple of weeks time, and raised £234 in the process.
This week’s full council meeting at Warwickshire County Council saw politicians and staff members urged to buy cakes and coffee as a preview to the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning for Macmillan Cancer Support, which takes place on Friday 29 September.
This event is expected to raise a much needed £7 million for people affected by cancer.
People across Warwickshire are being urged to organise their own coffee mornings, and also to think about inviting their local councillor along to add that special bit to the event, and certainly to liven up the chat!
Everyone can make their cuppa count by holding a coffee morning, at home, at work or at school and if the date isn’t right for you, then hold it on another day. It’s fun and easy to take part, all you need to do is make lots of coffee and invite friends, family, colleagues and neighbours to join you and make a donation for the coffee they drink.
People can support the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning in three very simple ways:
1. Hold a coffee morning for Macmillan by calling to register on 0845 602 1246 or visit http://www.macmillan.org.uk/coffee
2. Make a donation to Macmillan Cancer Support by cheque or online or paying by debit and credit card on the number above
3. Attend a special coffee morning event in your local community, for example All Saints Church in Leamington
The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is a record breaking event and one of the largest fundraising events in the UK. Last year nearly two million people, including celebrities like Martin Clunes, Lynda Bellingham and Samantha Bond hosted or attended coffee events and not only raised a staggering £6.5 million between them but also had a great time catching up with friends, family and colleagues. In Coventry and Warwickshire, over £122,000 was raised by coffee mornings in 2005.
Peter Cardy, Chief Executive of Macmillan Cancer Support, says: “One in three people will get cancer with 1.2 million people in the UK living with the disease. All money raised last year helped Macmillan be a source of practical, medical, emotional and financial support to those affected by cancer. So every cup of coffee on Friday 29 September really does count and every £1 raised can really make a difference to help people through their cancer journey.”
Bernadette Halton, local fundraising manager for Macmillan Cancer Support said: “In Coventry and Warwickshire we are raising money for a neuro oncology clinical nurse specialist as well as patient grants for people who are struggling financially because of their illness”
