Fire fighters on call to visit Rugby Age Concern

Older people in Rugby are being encouraged to drop in to their local Age Concern centre next week (23rd to 30th September) - and have a chat with a fire fighter!

Officers from Rugby Fire Station are on call to visit the Clifton Road centre and will be giving older residents plenty of top tips on how to stay safe from fire this winter.

The fire fighters’ visits are part of national Age Concern Week, which takes place next week.

Rugby Station Manager, Michael Leach said: “Older people can be particularly vulnerable to the risks of fire and, as winter and colder days approach, the potential hazards can increase.

“Items used to keep warm, such as fires, heaters and electric blankets pose an added risk and, in the event of a fire, older people can find it more difficult to escape or raise the alarm.”

A fire safety information display and variety of safety leaflets will be at the Age Concern Centre, Claremont, 43 Clifton Road from 23rd until 30th September.  Officers will be visiting the centre to answer any fire safety queries or questions on:

Monday 25th September – 10.30am to 12.30pm
Wednesday 27th September – 10.30am to 12.30pm
Friday 29th September – 2pm – 3.30pm

Warwickshire Fire & Rescue will also be giving older people the opportunity to get their homes checked for fire risks through their free Home Fire Safety Check scheme.

Michael Leach continues: “We hope that people will come and have an informal chat with us at the Age Concern centre. There are a number of cheap and practical things older people and their families can do to ensure their fire safety, and we are happy to advise.”
