Build fire safety into your work, contractors warned

Warwickshire Fire & Rescue are warning building contractors to take extra care when carrying out work that could be a fire hazard, following a 30% increase in building-related fires in the Stratford District.

Roofing, paint stripping, welding, soldering and angle grinding are just some of the activities that can lead to a potentially deadly outbreak of fire if builders do not take action to reduce the risks.

Jon Dixon, Manager of Stratford Fire Station, said: “There are some simple actions that builders can take to reduce the possibility of causing this sort of fire.

“Builders should check the area they are working in for any flammable materials before they start work.

“They should be careful not to overload plug sockets with electrical equipment and check that electrical cables haven’t been cut or pierced by stray nails or screws.”

Other fire safety advice to builders includes making sure they dispose of any cigarettes safely, have a fire extinguisher close to hand where they are working, and carry a mobile phone so they can raise the alarm if fire does break out.

Jon Dixon continues: “In the event of a building fire, it is vital that everyone gets out and stays out of the property.
“Builders on site should only tackle the fire if it is safe to do so and should call the fire brigade out giving the exact location. Naming landmarks close to the building can help the fire brigade locate the incident.”
