Young people have their say!
Young people from across Warwickshire are being asked to speak out on local issues and share ideas with local Councillors during Local Democracy week, which runs from 16 – 20 October.
There will be a number of events, including schools debate and question time, political speed dating, competitions and web blogs. In order to keep the momentum of the campaign going, there will also be a programme of activities running after the main week of events. This is to ensure that we continue to raise awareness of the work carried out within local communities with young people.
Cllr Izzi Seccombe, Portfolio holder for Children’s Services said;
“The aim of local democracy week is to encourage young people to learn more about how councils work and help councillors understand what young people really want. Over 85% of council services are used by young people and through events such as Local Democracy Week we are hoping to make our services more accessible. The theme of this years, event is ‘Take part, Take power’ and the focus will be on helping young people become more involved with decision making and planning at a local level.”
The web blogs, written by Councillors and staff from Warwickshire County Council, will start on Monday 16 October and will be available through http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/ldw06. Participants include Councillors McCarthy, Chattaway and Davis, and the Chief Executive, Jim Graham. All are looking forward to the challenge and are hoping that their daily blog will be of interest to both young people and adults across Warwickshire.
