Urgent action to prevent bird deaths at killer shelter
A bus shelter in Rugby has proved to be a hazard to birds, prompting Warwickshire County Council into urgent action with a helping hand from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).
A number of residents using the bus shelter in Hollowell Way in Brownsover, Rugby, reported seeing dead birds near the glass shelter.
Following consultation with the RSPB, Warwickshire County Council has found that high visibility stickers could be all that is required to prevent the birds injuring themselves.
The stickers have been placed on the shelter and Warwickshire County Council will be monitoring the situation.
Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “The RSPB has been extremely helpful in aiding us with this situation which I’m sure must have been distressing for some local residents.”
Louise Pederson, Assistant Public Affairs Officer with the RSPB, said: “We are delighted Warwickshire County Council is trying to avoid further bird deaths at this site. Bird Silhouette stickers are a quick and inexpensive way to reduce the reflection that confuses the birds and they are therefore more likely to avoid colliding with the glass.”
Anyone interested in obtaining their own window stickers or other bird friendly products can do so by visiting the RSPB’s online shop at http://www.rspbshop.co.uk.
